The Australian Code for Responsible Conduct of Research: what does it mean for you?

There is an expectation by the community, both in Australia and internationally, that research will be conducted in a way that is trustworthy, ethical and responsible. Great science depends upon great integrity. Sadly, in recent years there have been remarkable examples of what happens when researchers breach this trust. In Australia, researchers must conduct their research in a manner consistent with the ‘Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research’ (NHMRC et al 2007). All Australian research institutions are required to uphold the standards of integrity in research and scholarship set by Code. But what does that mean for the individual researcher? How will understanding and following the Code enhance your academic career?
This interactive and hands on workshop will ensure participants will understand the principles of responsible conduct of research and how to ensure these principles are embedded in their research practice. We will also explore the underlying practices and behaviours that may constitute a breach of the Code or actual research misconduct and approaches to managing these will be considered. An imaginative mix of case studies and drama will inform a lively discussion of the topic.
